The project to construct a new 400,000-volt Transmission Line connecting Hinckley Point ‘C’ Nuclear Power Station, Somerset into the National Grid network, Started during 2019. Progress has been steady and constant despite all the covid pandemic measures that came into place after the work was started. This project is 59 kms (37 miles) in distance and stretches up to Avonmouth near Bristol. Much groundwork has occurred during the early months to produce a hard surfaced stone track on section 2 and 3 in the Southern most area. This is a multi-section, multi aspect construction undertaking. It has been designed by the civil engineering department of the main contractor and at the road junctions it crosses, properly paved entrances are provided with ‘A’ class road standard on these back lane locations. This is needed to provide a continuous all-weather access across the Somerset Levels, providing the contractors with the luxury of unrestricted vehicle movements between each tower site along the route. The geographical location of these sections of this project lies in the Sedgemoor District of what is known as the Somerset Levels. This part of the area extends from the M5 motorway corridor in the West and Bridgewater to Glastonbury in the East and then up towards the Mendip Hills with Axbridge and Cheddar in the North.
Reports on the visits to Bridgewater and the Somerset Levels
Mostly all these levels in this area are agriculturally active with grassland supporting livestock and some arable crop yielding farms spread around its length and breadth. It is a rich and fertile landscape with a vast amount of water ways, ditches and Rhyne’s as known locally. These are all managed and kept by the Drainage Authority in the area.
